5 Things You Must Do When Purchasing Carpeting For Your Home

By Michael Hilton

If you are expecting to easily find the perfect carpeting for your home while browsing through the thousands of carpet samples that are available at your local carpet store, then you may be in for a stressful surprise. Choosing carpeting for your home can be complicated. Not only do you need to decide which color of carpeting would look best in your home, you need to shop for the best price and choose the right type of carpeting for your specific needs.

Five Tips for Carpeting Selection

  1. When shopping for carpeting, enlist the help of a salesperson. These people work with carpeting everyday, and they may be able to help you narrow your options from several hundred to a possible few. Carpet salespeople may also offer you important information on carpet warranties, carpet cleaning, and carpet installation.
  2. When you are at the carpet store, do not look at all the available carpet samples in the showroom, there are just too many to choose from. Instead, ask a salesperson to show you carpeting that is in your anticipated price range. Carpet pricing varies greatly, and there is no point in falling in love with a carpeting that costs $24 a yard, especially if your construction budget only allows for carpeting priced at $7 per yard.
  3. When comparing carpet samples which are in your price range, ask a salesperson which types of carpeting are readily available or in stock. Some carpet manufacturers require several weeks of lead time for certain orders, and these long lead times may disrupt your construction schedule.
  4. If you are on a tight budget and are only carpeting a few smaller rooms in your home, ask a salesperson if any carpet remnants or mis-orders are available. Carpet remnants are basically leftovers from another job, and sometimes you can get a deal on carpet remnants that are large enough to carpet a small bedroom in your home.
  5. Never choose a carpeting without first bringing a few carpet samples home with you. Carpet colors can look different in your home than they appeared in the carpet store. This is also a good opportunity to see what carpet colors are complimented by the paint on your home's walls and the available light in each room.

Carpeting is a huge part of the interior decor of your home, and you need to choose the best available option at the best possible price. This is why it is important to have a shopping strategy in mind before you walk through the doors of the carpet store and come face-to-face with thousands of carpet samples.
