Monsanto Wear Carpet

By Michael Hilton

Solutia (formerly Monsanto) Wear Dated® still provide some of the most trusted carpet styles on the market. While DuPont Stainmaster® is the icon name, Wear Dated products have always had a certain mystic among carpet retailers and consumers alike. During the transition years, when DuPont StainMaster was taking the market by storm, Monsanto was quietly gaining market share with higher end carpet styles. During those early years, when consumers actually thought StainMaster was stain proof, Monsanto was bringing a product to market that could withstand the same carpet stains as StainMaster. However there was one difference, hot beverages would easily stain StainMaster and DuPont excluded hot beverages under its warranty.

Monsanto, however, had perfected their stain resistant formulas to offer a warranty for hot beverages. Hot beverage stains were common because hot liquids would open dye sites and allow stains to "leak" in. Monsanto (now Solutia) was the first to capitalize on this Stainmaster weakness and earned a sizeable share of the market by communicating this selling point.

Solutia also up staged Dupont Stainmaster by extending their Stain warranties to seven years, rather than five. They also recognized that other stain resistant carpets offered a pro rated warranty. In essence, at four years (of a 5-year stain warranty) the percentage of reimbursement would decrease as the carpet aged. Monsanto contended that they were not "tire salesmen" and offered a full seven-year warranty, full replacement warranty.

Even today when you find a Wear dated product, you can expect the style to be a high end, durable product.

Wear Dated products use only type 6.6 nylon, the premium choice for nylon fibers. Type 6.6 nylon provides an excellent recovery rating, excellent appearance retention, excellent colorfastness, and excellent resistance to soil and staining.

Wear Dated products have minimum carpet construction standards and must meet minimum standards for twist level, carpet density, pile weight, and pile height. Every carpet style that carries the Wear Dated label is tested for performance.

While most branded carpet fibers will perform to your expectations, Wear Dated products have always seemed to be a step above the competition.
