From being environmentally conscious to simple home solutions for unusually tough carpet stains, these tips can help with a variety of carpet stains around your home.

Being Green with Tough Stains

Some carpet stain removers are advertised as "green" or "environmentally friendly." Some consumer feedback has shown, however, that the chemical formulas in some of these cleaners are not as strong. The solution? Patience.

If you want to do your part for the environment but have a carpet stain to remove, simply let these products set approximately twice as long as instructions advise. By doing so can increase their strength and allow them clean more deeply.

Carpet Stain Solutions for Casual Spaces

While these less traditional remedies don't always work in formal dining rooms or sitting parlors, they can function well in more casual rooms in your home.

• Furniture Shuffle

Shuffling furniture in a room can make a space look new, and can be an often overlooked solution to tackling touch carpet stains. Simply shift a couch or chair over the problem area and pat yourself on the back for a job easily done.

• Sweep it Under the Rug

When standard cleaning chemicals don't work against deep stains, buying a throw-rug can be a great solution, depending on the room. Some homeowners like the look of layered carpet, adding texture and color to a room by placing a thin rug over existing carpet.

• When in Doubt--Dye

This solution is usually best reserved for less expensive carpets in high traffic areas, like entryways, basements, or children's playrooms. When tough stains can't be treated or removed, it is possible to dye your carpet to match the surrounding area.

Home Chemistry for Unusual Stains

We're all familiar with food and beverage stains, but when stains come from less usual places, you may need something stronger than typical carpet cleaner.

For "people" stains like blood or baby diapers, a simple solution of ammonia (1 tablespoon) and water (3/4 cup) in a spray bottle can do the trick. Simply spray the target area generously and blot with a paper towel. Repeat as necessary, and if the stain persists, using a small amount of hydrogen peroxide on the stain can be a great finishing touch.

With a little know-how and some creativity, you can keep carpet stains from ruing your living space.
