If you have reviewed all of our Carpet Buyers Handbook sections on carpet installation, you should be aware that carpet installation remains the single biggest problem with most carpet purchases.  While most carpet installers are hard working, honest tradesmen, there are many who learned the art of carpet installation as an apprentice.  If the master installer never learned how to install carpet in the proper manner the problem is compounded in generation after generation.

Also, carpet installers have not received a pay raise since 1970-something, so many installers must complete several backbreaking installations per day to keep the family together.  Compounding this dilemma is most local flooring retailers take a significant portion of the amount charged for installation as "additional profit".  If a consumer invoice notes carpet installation charges of $7 per yard, the retailer may keep $4 as padded profit.

With the remaining $3, the carpet installer must buy tack strip to hold the carpet to the floor, transition metals, tape, tools, fuel, pay a helper, and whole laundry list of other items.  If a carpet installer walks away from the job with $50, he often feels he has had a good day.

The Carpet Buyers Handbook has always supported the efforts of the carpet installer.  They are the backbone of the carpet industry. 

• Most carpet installers are subcontractors of the local carpet retailer, so they have no health benefits.  They cannot afford to get sick.  If they don't work, they do not earn a paycheck.
• Most carpet installers work for a number of carpet retailers in your town.  While all carpet retailers "claim" to have the best carpet installers, chances are their installers work for their competitors, as well.

This section has been developed to assist the carpet installer market their services and to assist the consumer in finding their own carpet installer without being tied to the selection of the carpet retailer.  This section has not been designed to save a consumer money on the price of installation.  We honestly believe you should pay more.  This are is intended to allow you to pay the installer all that you would normally pay for installation, but rather than padding the profit of the retailer, you can help a hardworking tradesman.
