Website ManagementWhile website management was not one of our objectives when we built the Carpet Buyers Handbook, we quickly learned that not all of our Carpet Wholesalers were the most web savvy individuals, we had ever met. But why should they be? Managing a website requires considerable time, and even though uploading information is easy to learn, if the information has not been optimized for search engines, a wholesaler could lose their ranking. Another dilemma that faces carpet wholesalers is most web consultants do not understand "carpet" (most don't even understand website optimization). The consultant learns on your dime. That $40-$60 per hour fee to perform research on keywords, find niche's, and major competitors, could place you several hundred (or thousand) dollars in the hole before the consultant knows enough to fulfill your needs without "faking it". In most cases building, managing, and maintaining a website is far less expensive than TV and radio advertising, printed materials, and even the Yellow Pages, yet it's available to the entire world on a 24/7 basis and almost instantaneously accessed from every computer. Everyone dreams of earning millions from their website, but there are too few who actually see significant profit. Figure in the time it takes to learn to manage your own website (but your time isn't worth anything, right?) and it could become a break-even (at best) proposition. A number of carpet wholesalers go with the attitude of "Cool, we have a website. Now where is that customer phone list, so we can get back to the business of selling carpet".
